Another installment of the Invisible Ones of Washington, DC.
I happened to see Bernice coming from a subway station pulling a cart behind her loaded down with her belongings. What was remarkable about her was that inspite of the hot and humid summer weather she was dressed in layers of dark clothing and a scarf. I watched her for a block or so and noticed that she needed to stop and rest every so often. I approached her and asked if she needed any help. She declined saying that, "she was just passing through." I asked where she was coming from and going to and she would only say she was from Virginia. Other than telling me her name Bernice was not willing to talk about herself or her circumstances. She was friendly and approachable and readily agreed to allowing me to photograph her. Seeing the image brought a big smile to her face. One can only hope that Bernice will get to where she's going on this hot and humid day in Washington, DC.
